Motion-based tracking of natural objects

Ellips software for grading suits machines which are constructed with cups or rollers to transport the fruit under the cameras.

Because of the nature of potatoes which have more variety in size or length in 1 batch, a perfect cup size is hard to find.

Therefore a manufacturer started to construct a machine to transport the potatoes not in cups under the camera, but on a belt.

Since the EFG400 software timing is based on cups, software has to be adapted to this new idea.

So Ellips did studies for tracking the potatoes in our own vision software application development environment called “Imagebocks”.

The shape, the size, the speed and also the rotation of potatoes is calculated to distinguish each product, and track them trough more pictures.

Even a small potato overtaking another one can be seen if the shape of the 2 potatoes is different.

Here are the results of this study seen in a picture:

Now Ellips is working on speeding up this algorithm to a real time environment.
